Early playing cards dating to the 15th century are rare, and the decks that have survived are mostly fragmentary. Gothic Green Oak have collaborated with Black Letter in studying playing cards of this period, looking at incomplete decks and fragmentary cards, together with woodcut illustrations of the same artistic style and date, to design and produce a complete 52 card French-suited deck. Every effort has been taken to ensure the cards conform to the stylistic conventions of the 15th century.
Card backs are blank as was common on early cards; there are no jokers, as these were not introduced until the 19th century; and cards are not coated or laminated, as we have attempted as far as is possible within this price range to reproduce authentic playing cards of the period. Card dimensions 89 x 57mm (3 1/2" x 2 1/4").
